Gallery releases the Gallery Virtual Appliance

We are proud to announce the availability of version 1.0 of the The Gallery Virtual Appliance. It contains Gallery version 1.5.4 and 2.1.2 (the current latest).

The Gallery VMware Appliance is a GNU/Linux distribution based on rPath Linux. Basically, it is a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) appliance with both Gallery 1 and Gallery 2 pre-installed and pre-configured, along with all of the required utilities and most of the optional ones. They are both pre-loaded with some random pictures from various Gallery team members so that you can test things out without even having to find your own images.

This enables users to test and play around with a complete Gallery environment without having to install all the prerequisites on their local computer or hosting space. To run the Appliance, you'll need one of VMware 5.5+ Workstation, VMware Player 1.0+, or VMware Server 1.0.

Download the appliance, unzip it and boot it up using VMware Player. It couldn't be easier! For more details, check the documentation.

I've had a play with the image, but I can't see any way to set up a cart with PayPal - has this been left out ? - I couldn't see any way at all of configuring the cart directly, and being relatively useless with linux, I was having trouble figuring out where (and how) to install it to test :-}

Would it be possible to update the image so users can see how the cart works with PayPal ? (i'm sure many users would use that rather than online processors that may not be available in their country)

There are no 3rd party modules included with this VMware player image. I believe what you are refering to is one of these 3rd party modules.

I think your idea is a good one, there are a few good 3rd party modules that might make a good addition. I will think about it and discuss it with our team and see what we decide. Thanks for the feedback and ideas. Any other 3rd party modules you would like to see in it?

Of course, you *can* add them yourself. I have included the "wget" command which you can feed a URL, and the unzip command should get you going.

Simply...

cd /srv/www/gallery2/modules/
wget http://the.domain.com/and/url/to/file.zip
unzip file.zip

If it is a tar.gz or tar.bz2, you would use "tar zxvf" or "tar jxvf".

I love it! DEMOing this is very nice. The requirements are low for the VM server. I am running this in VMWare Server 1.0 and it runs amazingly smooth. My only issue is the follow up instructions on what to do if you want to blow away the current data and use your own. I've blown them away, but now I have no clue how to configure my own content or reconfigure the gallery2 application. At least a link as what to do next would be nice..especially for those who live in the World of Windows.

That is a good idea. All you need to do after you blow it away is re-visit the ./gallery/ or ./gallery2/ URL and you will be forced into the installer. Did you figure that out yet?

I agree it would be good to have 3rd party stuff added but I think out of the box it should be core only, so people can see what is standard and then add 3rd party stuff themselves. Maybe the adding could be made simpler by the creation of a menu from a shell script or even a default web page. You will have to forgive me I have not loaded the image yet but if the server had a home page with "Gallery 1.5.x", "Gallery 2.x", "Install 3rd party modules..." then that would be really easy!

Just my thoughts...

Geoff

The box shall remain core only, we'll see what Downloadable Plugins (DP) adds to this in the 2.2 release. If 3rd party modules end up in the DP download page, it'll be a breeze.

This is great! I just demonstrated Gallery 2 on my MacBook (using Parallels and the G2 Appliance disk image) and it received great feedback!

I had a doubt, is there software piracy associated with your album software. the problem is wide spread now.

Our software is resistant to piracy because it's free. You can do anything you want with it under the terms of the GPL.

Are all free softwares resistant to piracy?
where do i find the terms of GPL?

http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html has the GPL. There is no such thing as piracy involved with GPL products, as they are free to distribute.
