Gallery 2.1 Release Candidate 2

Gallery 2.1 RC2 is now available for download! This is the second (and hopefully last) release candidate before Gallery 2.1 final. A release candidate helps users like you test out new features and provide feedback so that the final version has as many possible issues resolved. We have 4 different packages for you to choose from. You can read all about it on our Gallery 2 Download Page.

As always before you ask for help, please, please read the README -- we've made an effort to answer all of your questions there. Especially read the known issues section. If you're upgrading, be sure to scan the super easy updating instructions first. Then head on over to the Gallery 2.1 RC2 Forum Topic and let us know what you think!

Thanks for your continued support! Read on for more details...

Note: This is a *pre-release* version, and you should be sure to BACK UP YOUR GALLERY *before* installing and upgrading your current Gallery.

New Features Include:

  1. New Ratings module allows users to vote for their favorite photos.
  2. New RSS module provides syndication of your Gallery's content to the world, so users can track content updates.
  3. New module to support hidden items and albums. Hidden items are restricted from guest users until accessed by the direct URL. Migrate module now imports hidden items from G1 as hidden in G2 if this module is active.
  4. New module to support password protected items and albums. Passwords are complementary to the G2 permission management. Passwords are impersonal while the G2 permission system handles access and rights for specific users and user groups.
  5. New Reupload module allows replacing an image file while keeping the title, description, comments, etc.
  6. New Permalinks module works with the URL Rewrite module to create short URLs using just the album name, as in Gallery 1.x.
  7. New Linkitem module creates links to other albums or external URLs.
  8. New module to import albums from Picasa.
  9. New module to support Google Sitemaps.
  10. New module for retrieving id3 tag information.
  11. New link in comments module to view all recent comments. Also an option to require captcha for posting anonymous comments.
  12. New option to apply album and theme settings recursively to all subalbums.
  13. URL Rewrite module now supports IIS (isapi rewrite) and pathinfo.

...and many more!

New features are great. I have yet to use the picasa module but look forward to getting it setup in the next couple days. The only issue that I have is the last update (R1) when updating from windows using filezilla I recieved a lot of files that wrote over the old files but zero'ed them out. Meaning there were a lot of files that were zero length which caused modules not to appear or would simply give me errors. Most of them were are *.inc files. So if anyone has ideas of why this happened I'd like to know. I think I am going to try and use the automatic updater that someone mentioned before to see if that is more successful... Cheers! And great job for another update.

Version 2.0.99+2.1-rc2-1 of the Debian gallery2 package (strange version so the final 2.1 release can get the 2.1 version in Debian) was uploaded to Debian experimental in the afternoon (EST) of Friday, March 10, 2006. It should be available in Debian experimental as of the archive run in the afternoon (EST) of March 10, 2006 or March 11, 2006.

When gallery 2.1 is released, the gallery2 package in unstable will be updated. RC releases will be made to experimental.
