When an album is marked "new" or "updated" it would be nice to have the changes appear at the top of the album hierarchy.
Our gallery is organized as such
Mom
Dad
Son
Daughter
--Camp
--School
----2005 Art class
--Friend
If the "2005 Art class" album is created, it will be marked "new" and "School" album will be marked "updated" but on the home page, the "Daughter" album will not be marked as "updated" or "new". Can the behavior be changed to allow the "updated" flag to cascade all the way up the hierarchy. If there is a reason to only allow it to change the immediate parent, could there be a toggle to allow depth of notification?
This change would also help the autosorting of albums based on modification date be more useful. As it stands now, the order is only resorted if a user makes a new high level album, but does not change if a user makes a "deep" change.

hmm, i see how this could be useful, for some purposes.
please file your feature request on http://sf.net/projects/gallery/ -> RFE

I thought it was tossed back and forth several times; and the final decision was to do like Unix does - propagate ¨updated"just one level up... It can be argued both ways, but I don think itś an enhancement compared to how it is now

It seems like the current behavior is only useful if the gallery has a very shallow structure, otherwise the "new" and "updated" tags will probably never be seen by users unless they link directly to the new or updated albums/parent album.
That is why I proposed what I thought was a reasonable compromise to just allow the admins to control the behavior so that it can operate either for "shallow" galleries or "deep" galleries.

well, we didn't think about the newitem module when discussing the modified timestamp.
the discussion was more general, and we decided for a filesystem like approach where the parent folder gets modified, if you do something in the folder.
but yes, maybe as an option, once could introduce it. but as with all feature requests of such a kind, someone considering it important enough has to do implement it.

I would love for someone with developer skills to think that this was important. In the thread above there are obviously two very different views. I would like to see that the top level album has been updated by any of its subordinate albums. This would mean that if I added a new item five levels down, all of the albums above that item would show updated until I click on them.

Has anything been done to include this feature into the next Gallery release?
