Why do we ask for a url to your site? This is a boilerplate answer and only a few might be applicable to you:
Because it is a lot easier to see the issue than for you to describe it.
What you might call the navigation we might call the bread-crumb.
What you might describe as a border could very will be padding or margin.
Did you do any customizations?
With over 6 stock themes and countless variations of 3rd party themes, it is hard to understand them all and be fluent in customizations of all.
Do you expect us to install the theme you are using on a test gallery to test your issue?
If you don't want to give a URL to a production site, then why can't you install a test gallery and give us a link?
Some people are English as a second language and might not understand the description you are trying to portray.
A picture is worth a thousand words.
From a description it is hard to tell the theme and color pack you are using.
All themes behave differently and with different colorpacks, that makes it even harder to diagnose the issue.
Some people are not developers and need to see things to understand.
You could be using a older or newer version of a plugin and we might not have that version on our test setup.
Should we install your version (that you did not even menthion) to test for you?
Some themes add extra dynamic content that we might not see, so how are we to know what you are describing if we can't see it.

I have found 2 tools that are invaluable the firefox browser and the web development tool that allows you to Make live edits to the CSS of a web page..
Once you have them both installed....
select edit css and under the 'information' dropdown check display ID & class details.
Edit your CSS and you will see the results. Once you have this the way you want, upload your edited css to the server.

You might add FireBug to this list. I use it everyday in my work and find it easier to work with than the Web Development tool, because of its display of CSS inheritance. I don't know how people did CSS inheritance before it. I guess they just did a separate class for every item!
