is there anyway you can set up the gallery to sell prints? i want it set up so ppl pay me and i get them developed and posted to them. I dont want to use the built in ecommerce shops.
There are three modules you want to look at; Checkout, CheckoutEmail and CheckoutPaypal. The first is a replacement for Cart and handles the "add to cart" functions. The second is for sending an email to someone (yourself) who would then printoff the photos and mail them (you'd have to figure out how to get payment). The third uses Paypal to transfer funds (I assume it also emails the order to you; I haven't looked into this module in detail).
where do i get these modules from? are the already installed in the gallery somewhere?

The checkout modules are now available from the Community Repository, using the Get More Plugins tab of the plugins admin page in your Gallery installation.

i have downloaded the new plugins and activated them, but when you go to the photos click add to cart it works, but it does give an option to pay by paypal or by email. How do i get it to show these options?

You need to tick the payment plugins to be displayed on the checkout admin page.

Site Admin > Checkout > scroll down to 'Checkout plugins to display'
If you don't see that option on the checkout admin page, you may need to delete the template cache from Site Admin > Maintenance

i have those buttons already ticked but they still dont appear in the cart?
i have deactivated the original cart plugin as i take it the new checkout plugin performs the cart operation. But since i have deactivated the cart and acticvated the checkout plugin, there is now no cart at all!

Have you read the section on '[checkout] Purchase item' permissions in http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:Modules:checkout#Configuring_the_modules ?

Have a good look through the checkout admininistration page (Site Admin > checkout) and I'm sure you'll be able to answer your own question.
