yes, in 2 steps:
1. upload via ftp to some other directory
2. use "add items -> from local server"

Well what do you do when the "from local server" option doesn't exist?

I'm experiencing a similar problem.
My install of Gallery 2 is hosted with Go Daddy if that helps or makes a difference.
I don't see a "local server" option on the add items page either.
I only have the "From Web Browser" option as in the above screenshot.
Also from reading the documentation ( http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:How_to_Add_Items#How_to_Add_Items_from_the_Local_Server_.28or_with_FTP.29 ) there is supposed to be a Site Admin -> Web/Server section to allow you to configure which directories contain images for the Gallery.
My admin section does not cantain the Web/Server section.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
