Weird characters after migration to 2.2.4 from 1.5.7

I've just migrated to Gallery 2.2.4 from a 1.5.7 installation.

Actual fact, I upgraded from a 1.44 to 1.5.7 first. And followed the directions about missing orphans etc...

I have all my pictures and folders. Only problem is the amount of folders that have titles and summaries that look like:

八代ファミリー

This is supposed to be in Japanese.

Is there anything I can do besides rename 2500 pictures ?

G2 version: 2.2.4
G1 version: 1.5.7 (upgraded to 1.5.7 prior to migration)
G1 character set: Unknown, where can I see this?
