main gallery albums as a block?

does anyone know how to set up a custom block so your main gallery page could be a block?

basically I'd like to list in a block

the 10-15 most recent albums
and see:
album name
album thumbnail
album views #
summary (description)

basically just like the main page in gallery.
so, any ideas?

I did try the image block and found a number of problems:
1- you can only list up to 5 albums
2- in "recent albums" mode, the gallery itself gets listed... and it looks buggy.
(how about a feature that lists only recent albums that have images in their first level down?)
3- summaries are not listed.
