Installation problem

I installed wpg2 but when I try to install gallery2 something is not working with gallery2. I am a newbie and am unclear about where gallery2 needs to go once it is unzipped...sorry for the dumb question...Do I need to create a new folder in the directory similar to the wpg2? If so, what and where? All the How to information I have found just sort of skips over this step.
