Hi,
A girlfriend of mine gave me a call last night and was interested in a "family" type site. She would like to be able to have family members come able to have their own picture gallery to upload photos and/or Video. I used to use Nuke for sites like this and was a huge fan of gallery2 and would like to implement it with joomla. However, I am fairly new to joomla and don't want to deal with massive problems or editing and I plan to use Community builder addon for her permissions.
So, what I need to know is will G2 give me the ability to use the user group permissions in joomla to allow her family members to come to site, create their own photo galleries (maybe video too) and upload their photos through the joomla site?
I would also like to use Community builder will it work with CB addon installed?
Finally what will I need to download besides the g2 install?
Thanks for any information you can provide.

You should be able to do what you want with Joomla and Gallery. I have a similar setup for a family gallery site. You can setup permissions within Gallery admin, although for my usage I kept it simple, admin (me) and everyone else. My Joomla site is registered users only, so I don't have to deal with guest rights, etc. but you could setup Gallery for various groups. The one thing I did was allowed registered users pretty much full control except for deletion. Rights wise in Gallery, you cannot separate "delete folder" and "delete photo" (just a Delete Items right), so I didn't want a family member accidentally deleting an album with bunch of subalbums and all their photos inside. Otherwise, family members can upload and create their own subalbums as they wish.
You will need to install Joomla and then install Gallery (I am using Joomla 1.5). The programs do not have to be in the same database or folder. Make sure Gallery works outside Joomla first. Then install the bridge component. This allows Joomla and Gallery to sync users and have one login to access both programs. Additionally, if you create a menu link in Joomla to the bridge component, it will then show Gallery in a wrapped view. The bridge is located here:

The key thing most people have issues with is that you have to pick a theme in Gallery that is similar enough to your Joomla theme. In other words, the theme you pick in Joomla isn't shared in Gallery (think of it as a window inside Joomla).
I do not use Community Builder, but I know the Joomla 1.5 bridge has a CB plugin and will work with CB. Other than that, I cannot help much on that front.
