Akismet filtering too much, and other comment spam problems

Hi

After a recent upgrade and enabling Akismet I have a number of comment spam problems:

- I ran the 'Check all comments now' from the Comments admin and it has identified lots of false negatives, i.e. lots of genuine comments have been marked as spam
- under 'Moderate Comments' (27 pages worth!) the link 'mark as not spam' doesn't appear to do anything, and as such I don't feel I dare hit the 'Delete all spam' button
- lots and lots of spam is being moderated but without being able to delete all in one go it is far too tedious deleting it one-by-one. Will it be deleted anyway after a set period of time? And is there a risk if I don't do something quick some of the genuine comments will go too?
- is there any way of configuring Akismet - for example at the moment it seems to filter any comment which has any sort of link in it

Any help much appreciated as it's driving me round the bend!

Thanks, James

Hate to dig up an old post, but I concur with this.

Checking all comments repeatedly brings up genuine stuff.

I've looked for in-depth doco on how Akismet has been implemented in Gallery and not found much -- is it true that it only scans comments with links? As clicking that button returned potential spam on comments without anylinks...

Does the Check All button use Akismet?

*gest out shovel and digs up an oldie, again*

After discovering that I was still getting email notifications for Akismet-detected spam comments, I decided to use the remove spam button... and now all my site comments, bar one, are gone :(

I have older SQL backups -- is there a documented way to just restore the comments?

No, there's no documented way to do that, that I've seen. Only restore the entire database.

Hrm... thanks.

It's really quite annoying that the CAPTCHA and Akismet stuff is well, basically, broken.

I've had no problems with them.

Well, getting mails about new comments that are spam is annoying... and the moderation system is bad -- should at least be able to radio button select and do an action on them...

What I also don't get is that I've unticked "Moderate all comments" and I'm still seeing messages come up in the moderation queue?

I've now logged a bug on this -- I've proven that there's a bug somewhere...

nivekiam: How do you find having to wade through pages and pages of Akismet-detected and hence moderated spam then?

What I mean is.. am I missing something, or can Gallery/comment not just trash spam?

I'm considering patching the Comment module to at least give radio buttons so that you can bulk select stuff and hit delete... one by one is very, very annoying.

That is your only option as development on G2 has stopped. You could submit a patch with your bug so if somebody else will continue development ( the greatness of open source ) with G2 they can use your input.
