Is it possible to copy a pic to something like Photobucket from a Gallery2 gallery using the pic's url address? Or, must they be copied to a desktop and uploaded from there?

Have you tried?

Yes. Unless there's some way Gallery does it differently to everywhere else, I click the thumbnail, which expands the pic, right click (PC) or Control+click (Mac) which brings up a menu that includes a 'copy address' option. Highlighting that usually allows pasting to, say, Photobucket. We've set up the gallery for our forum and a couple of our members have also reported they can't upload using the url address. Does Gallery do it some other way?

I have searched the Gallery2 site for 'uploading using url' and 'uploading pic using url' without success.

By the way, I'm not entirely sure how why I'd ask the question, if I hadn't tried.

I have just realised my question might have been confusing. I am speaking as a visitor/user. Our gallery is for visitors to view and copy pictures from. We are not commercial. By 'upload' I meant 'copy'. My apologies for any confusion. I have searched Gallery2 for advice on ways to copy pictures, doing searches on 'copy', 'copy pictures', 'ways for copying pictures', and can't find anything. Can you point me in the direction of the section on how visitors to a gallery can use it? This is a very large site and I've obviously missed it.

I think Floridave's alluding to the fact that many people jump straight in and ask questions without taking the time to look through the site or the FAQ's, or the list of extra modules that you can add to gallery to extend its functionality.

Useful google search:

Thanks, alecmyers. However, it's the other way around I'm trying to find out about. As far as I'm able to tell, we've uploaded to the gallery without a problem. Although, that might be the problem. Maybe there's something in the uploading process we've missed or messed up. Btw, so far, anyway, our users are finding the gallery very good - even those who have either dialup or slow connections haven't had any problems with pages loading. However, on most internet sites, it is possible to copy a picture and save it to a picture hosting site by copying the image address. For instance, using a Mac, if I point my cursor to the home page of this site, and hit Control+click, I'll get a menu that includes the option, 'copy image address'. Choosing that gives me:

http://gallery.menalto.com/themes/gmc/images/examples.png

Which I can then copy into the suitable option in, say, Photobucket which will then store it.

However, when I go through that process with a picture I have uploaded to our gallery, I will get:

http://richardarmitagecentral.co.uk/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=96032&g2_serialNumber=1

which is useless for trying to copy to a hosting site. It's lacking the image format information, I guess that's the problem.

Certainly, it is possible to save the image to a desktop, but, since most galleries in our community - and in fact most internet sites - allow users the 'copy image address' option, we'd like to be able to do it, too.

Has that explained it better? I'm looking through the links you've given me, which are very helpful for some other questions I've had, but because I'm more a user than someone working at your end, I can't see the information that might help with this. If I do find something - I'll shout.

....

I've now been through all the links and there's nothing I can see that helps. So, over to you for suggestions. And, please let me know when/if I should take this to a different forum.

Oh I see.

If you turn on url rewrite (it may already be on) and activate the 'download' rule (which is not recommended unless you have a need for it for speed reasons), you get nicer urls for the downloadItem view. I'm not sure if they end in .jpg though - there are other and better ways to determine the format than the last three characters of the url.

To find the url of an image more easily there are various options. See:
http://gallery.menalto.com/node/84325
(Again, easily found with a Google search.)

There's another module that displays a block where you can copy/paste the url to an image too (if it's not in the link above) - there was a thread about it in the last week, but I don't have time to trawl for it right now. I'm sure you'll find it.

Thanks. Looks like that link has what I need.

I did do a Google search - obviously on the wrong search parameters.

Just while I'm doing this, and just so I know what I'm dealing with, is there a way of knowing how much activating url rewrite will slow things? We have around 50,000 pics in the gallery at the moment and that's going to grow. Not sure if that information actually helps you. I'm assuming that it's possible to undo it if necessary.

It will slow the things by 3.54 - but I don't know what the units are.

Seriously, you'll have to check and see if you can notice any difference. As I understand it, it just inserts an extra layer of code in between your browser and each image, which will occur 48 times, for example, on one page of 48 thumbnails.

Of course, you can turn it off if it's a problem.

OK. Cool. You've been very helpful.

I've activated Url rewrite and it's just what we want. I'm waiting on one of our members, who's on dialup, to tell me if it's made a big difference. Either way, this is great to know. Thank you!

By the way, if it wasn't clear, it's only the download-item rule in url-rewrite that's not recommended, because it can occur multiple times within each page of thumbnails. The other rewrite rules occur generally act only only once, on the url for the page you're accessing, so there's not much overhead.

who's on dialup...

I think they would be the least likely to notice, actually, as any extra delay in parsing the url would be lost in the relatively long time it would take them to download the images.
