I'm trying to build a website with a gallery2 installation with Joomla 1.5. I want ot be able to restrict the generation of albums to a subset of users - not all registered users.
Is there anyway I can do this - as far as I can see all registered users automatically have create album permissions!

Sure, create another group under Site Admin and then put users in that group and assign permissions to that group instead of just Registered Users.
Registered users don't automatically have create album permissions unless you've given them that in an album (main page included). Then any album created under that album will inherit those permissions.

So if I understand it, I create a "photographers" group I can give members permission to create sub-albums from the main album. Then I turn off any permissions from "Registered Users". I'm checking because I'm using Jfusion and the gallery login is a slave to the Joomla log-in. This should still work - would it?

...I've removed the user albums module from my gallery installation. I'm hoping that stops the creation of albums by person. So I need to now set the create albums permissions - right?

Oh, well you didn't state you had the Users Album plugin installed, though I should have guessed from your comment in your first post.
That plugin is designed and can be configured, so new users get an album created specifically for them. Only they and the site admins can create albums and post photos to that album of theirs, nobody else can.
