Hello,

I'm trying to get to the bottom of why my gallery is running incredibly slow since about one week ago. I assume something is gunked up in the php on the web server but I don't know how to verify. I've looked through the performance tips but didn't find anything that worked. It's a big gallery and with a lot of modules active and has worked well in the past. The only error I've seen so far was when I tried to "optimize database" in the site admin section and that failed after thinking for about 3 or 4 minutes.

Thank you to anyone who can get me pointed in the right direction.

I have tested now and yes, loads really slow.

I don't know why the performance is so low because the gallery isn't really big (look at http://www.sharewallpapers.org), but you can try some things.

Switch your template to the matrix and try the performance.
Deactivate the album select module and try again.
Don't use the google module because it slows down the server and also kills you in SEO terms.
Deactivate the random module

If the performance is the same with these trips, reinstall gallery2

No change is speediness making those changes. Hmm... Should I just proceed to gallery2/install and step through that again? Will that do a "reinstall" and preserve the mysql database?

Problem seemed to be on the webserver side. My provider said they didn't do anything but it's fixed now.

Yes, most speed issues with Gallery are at the web server side. Slow database, slow server, over sold (overloaded) server, slow or overloaded network, etc. There are a few things you can do that will slow Gallery down, too many or excessive permission settings, EXIF and some other plugins.
