Hi,

Please forgive this basic question...sadly, I'm not an expert in this field...

I just received an email from my hosting company that they are going to drop me in 2 weeks because I've created too many files on their server using Gallery 2.

So I've been trying to find a solution to my problem...when reviewing the folders, I noticed that g2data/cache/entity and g2data/cache/derivative are the folders with the most files.

Do these files reduce down when I optimize the database? Is there a way to keep these folders small in size even though I have a huge database?

Here is my database... http://illinoisancestors.org/cemphotos/main.php

It has over 58,000 photos....

It looks like I'll need to move to another hosting site if I can't reduce the number of files in my database. Can anyone recommend a good VPS hosting site?

thank you so much,
manderly

That one you can empty without pain

You shouldn't empty that one

You might want to look at:

but DB size and number of files is different. In the end I suspect you will want to find a new host if they don't offer you an upgrade path with your hosting company now.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for your help! You're absolutely right...there isn't any way I can get the database under the 50,000 file limit the hosting company has imposed on us.

I know this question is out of the range of this forum, but does anyone have suggestions on which hosting company I should switch to? I'm afraid of making a wrong decision here...

It's obvious I made a bad choice with the hosting company I picked and I only have 2 weeks in getting my data off of their server...

very worried,

P.S. - Is there someone I can hire to backup my gallery and move it to the new server?

many thanks,

I'm also in the same boat with Hostmonster. They advertise as having unlimited diskspace, etc., but of course, in the fine print you have a limit of 50,000 files. Go figure. So I have 300,000+ files and most of them are from the caches in Gallery 2. I have deleted them, but each time a picture is accessed, the associated cache file is recreated.

To answer your question -- I have been googling for hosts to switch to. I found this one -- but you may want to read a bit about the company and also look for reviews online (they are located in Canada).

http://www.layeronline.com/

Highlights:
- cheap
- the company will buy out your old hosting contract (if I recall correctly, they will refund you up to 10 months of subscription fee you've paid to your former host)
- the company will move all your files for free

I haven't contacted them -- but since coming across your post, I've been thinking about moving to a better host so ... will continue researching and contacting other web hosts.

Good luck! Please share here when you've found a new web host to go with and kindly provide links. Thanks!

Hi,

Thank you for your suggestions!

I did find another hosting compnay...I haven't been there for very long but I think it might be a good fit for us...

www.justhost.com

They might be worth your while...and they will transfer all of your data for $49.95.

take care,
