I would like to change my resizes without breaking image URLs. Currently I have one resize set to 550x550. I tried adding another resize, but it appeared to break the existing image URLs. I have a Wordpress blog and entries contain static URLs to the image.
Is there a way to retain the URL but change the image size, or is there a better way of embedding images in Wordpress?

Have you tried the permalinks module?

I've turned on Permalinks just now, but from what I understand that affects albums only. I have friendly album links already, like:
http://www.kataan.org/v/Cameras, which works fine.
The actual image URL for one of the photos in that album is http://www.kataan.org/gallery/d/14091-9/ricoh500g.jpg. If I change the resizes, the 14091-9 portion will change to 14091-XX, breaking the URL on my blog. Does this make any sense?

I have never used the peramlink module so can't offer an opinion.

The permalinks module works on photos just fine. However, it's on the photo, not the resized versions.
I'm pretty sure this is going to come down to you will need to plan how you want your gallery setup and set it in concrete.
Wait, I've just wasted about 20 minutes playing around with this. I can't duplicate what you are seeing. I just tested an image, the resized was 480x600, I added a 225x300 and a 375x500 image and the 480x600 URL remained the same.
The only way I was able to "duplicate" this behavior was to remove a resized version (the 480x600) and recreate it so that my list of resized versions are "in order" from smallest to largest, not in order of when they were created.
That behavior is expected and can't be changed. If you uncheck a resized version and click save, you have just deleted it, it's gone. Recreating that resized version creates a completely new derivative (image) of that size, new serial number, new URL, etc.
So yeah, better planning. Figure out how you want your Gallery or at least a particular album setup and it never changes, at least in terms of how your resized versions are setup.
Even rebuilding my resized versions did not get rid of the resized versions or change the URLs of one that already existed.
