Fresh install, adding photos hangs during 'Processing items'

Fresh install from scratch of 2.3. When I add photos to an album, it hangs during 'Processing items' with estimated time remaining of 1-2 seconds. The items all appear in the album and everything appears to be working fine.

No errors in debug mode, it just hangs there too.
Nothing in event logs.
File integrity intact.

Build all thumbnails also hangs.

The issue appears to lie with 'square thumbnails' With this disabled everything works, but I really would like to use the square thumbnail feature.

Worked with host to get ImageMagick working, and changed from GD to ImageMagick. That resolved the issue.

I was having the same problem, then noticed it was only happening after "auto-rotate based on EXIF data" was checked.

That won't work with GD (I'm pretty sure). Works with IM out of the box and NetPBM if you have jhead installed.
