Is there some way to set Gallery to only display an album select on the home page? I don't what the users to have to rummage through twenty pages of images before getting to the next album...
You might want to take a look at the Classic theme.

The only options I see when trying to change themes is < default theme > and matrix... Though classic is installed in the themes directory. It just isn't showing up in the list of themes on the Gallery Item Administration or the Themese selector

You need to install and activate it in Site Admin > Plugins. Then under Site Admin > Themes you can change it to Classic and change the settings.

You need to move those pictures into an album, those are not albums. Even using the Album select plugin won't help you. You've put all of your pictures inside the "main album" (the front page) of gallery. You need to create sub-albums and put the pictures in there and organize them.

Oh, wait, you could sort the album. Edit Album > Album (tab)
Example:
Title > Ascending > presort = Albums First

Heh that's getting closer!
But what I really want is JUST the albums to show up on the first page, and no pictures. I want the user to click on the album and then be presented with the picutres, or subalbums inside the album...

See my demo Gallery http://photos.kevinnehls.com/ That's all albums except for the beer pic. Creating a hierarchical structure, just like you'd organize your folders in your computer makes things much easier to deal with
