URL for thumbnails

Is there any option to display a thumbnail for a given image ?
E.g. main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=18978
displays the full-sized image.
I look for something like main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=18978&g2_thumb=1
which should display the derivated thumb of item=18978.

We will need this for a (self-written) search engine, which does not know the itemId of the thumb.
