Why do I get this message when I try to extract my zip file on 2.3?

Archive: gallery-2.3-full-en.zip
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
note: gallery-2.3-full-en.zip may be a plain executable, not an archive
unzip: cannot find zipfile directory in one of gallery-2.3-full-en.zip or
gallery-2.3-full-en.zip.zip, and cannot find gallery-2.3-full-en.zip.ZIP, period.

What are you trying to use to unzip it? Maybe you got a bad download.

Are you using the preinstaller or are you at the Linux or Windows command line?

We need more info. :)

Oh thank you for your response! I use Hostmonster and I do sites for others and I wanted to use this for the ones who want a web gallery for their features or products. It said that there were more templates on the 2.3 so I downloaded that one but could not find an install.exe file. Then I read that I could unload the zip to my host server so I did and could figure out how to change to 777 but got that message instead. Hostmonster said it was corrupt from that statement there so I have just deleted everything everywhere. Now I am wondering if I should just go with the Beta 3. I need 1,2,3 kind of help apparently which is why the preinstaller looked great. Is it included in the zip download? Should I download it again and look for a preinstaller file? If so, what is it called? Hostmonster has php installed already they said. Thank you so much!

Please don't use the preinstaller. :) It does seem to create more confusion if things don't go right.

Detailed information (maybe more than you want to know, but read through these pages)
http://codex.gallery2.org/Category:Gallery_2:Installation

Basic run-down:
In your host monster control panel create a database. Write down ALL info they give you, username, password, database name, host name, etc

Download G2 from here: http://codex.gallery2.org/Downloads

Unzip it on your local computer

Upload the unzipped directory to your server. Name it what ever you want, gallery, gallery2, photos, etc But do leave it as a directory, www.example.com/gallery Unless Gallery is going to be the entire site, it will make your life easier :)

Create a directory, named g2data or g2data_<InsertRandomStuffHere> That directory should be above your web root if possible, I don't know how hostmonster is setup. If you can't put directories above your webroot, then it will need to be someplace under your website. You'll need to know the full system path (not the URL) /var/www/UserName/example.com/g2/g2data_1fd597438afeg for example.

Change the permission on your g2data directory to 777

Once everything is uploaded, go to www.example.com/gallery (or where ever you uploaded Gallery to) and you should be walked through the installer.

I am getting ready to work on this - as a newbie, do you think I am better off with Gallery 2 or 3? (before I start this process)

For a production site? G2. G3 is still a ways off from completion if you need something now. If you can wait (don't ask, I don't know how long) then G3 might be better.

But if you're a newbie, G2 has better documentation. G3 is in Beta. If you want to dig in and help out, posting problems you have, etc, feel free. Be aware it's not complete and there are things that just don't work right now.

Thank you for that clarification - I think I will do better with the G2 for starting out.
