Migrating emAlbum to Gallery and using external existing auth structure

Hello,

I have been tasked with migrating an old custom emAlbum web album (flat files) into a new Gallery 2 installation.
If anyone can give me any good pointers/starting points for:

a) Integrating gallery with an existing mysql based auth system (so only users that have already authenticated can get into the gallery)

b) Migrating a "flat file" system with "flat files" filled with long descriptions for each file into gallery. (easily done, or need to be done image by image by hand?)

Any starting information anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

Writing a script to import your descriptions and image paths would be easy enough.
Then worry about syncing your users. Which would be fairly easy as well.
