hello all,
G3B3 been working good for me!
Since i use many embedded photos in my web site(s), would my links/URL be lost if the photo's location changed? i am afraid it would not be visible anymore. correct?
what i am suggesting is an important feature that once a photo was entered into your G3 database, it's location would be tracked and its link/URL would automatically be adjusted to maintain the photos visibility and usefulness in other web sites, etc. this is important if somehow the photo album is moved to (for example) another album.
this feature is really kind of a 'auto' database repair. its a maintenance feature.
please try to include this in a near upcoming version of G3.
thanks,

If the item stays in the same album and you change its name you can still retain the url. A new feature in B3 allows you to edit the Internet Address.
It is very complex to remember all urls and never change them and keep meaningful names in urls. It would be easy to do this if all item had a number associated with them, but this is poor for search engines and meaningful names.
Perhaps 3rd party will full-fill your dreams.
Dave

Hello Dave,
I did not realize it was that complex thinking that a db item id/number is keyed to the user photo's name by the db itself. are there any galleries offering such an feature that you are aware of?
with the new URL Edit feature can you edit the album URL and then the photos within will adapt? that would save time.
where can i find the latest B version of G3?
G3 has been working great so far. thanks to all for the hard work on G3!

Some photo galleries use a random number for the item and this never changes, similar to the itemId in G2. This is god in one respect but poor for intuitive names in urls that most people want. As for what ones; you have to look for yourself.
As for album name you have to play and find out. I doubt that if you rename a item from: falmily/fred.jpg to /summer09/jim.jpg they will still stay the same.

hello Dave,
what i am talking about would be like keeping the same photo/file name but either moving the file itself or the album it is in to another album/directory. would this case make it more reasonable to do? it would seem that many users would from time to time may move a photo or the album its in.
i just have a fear that somehow the URL may get changed without me KNOWING it happened! i guess i thought that a relational db did this sort of thing due to its basic design, but i am novice at this kinda stuff even though i mess around with db and the like.
BTW: what db does G3 use?
thanks for the info and consideration with this request.

If you want a 'perma link' feature then there is a request in already:
http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/gallery/ticket/516
@db: MySQL 5 and later

A permalink module would do what you want. You can also always refer to a photo/movie by its alternate url format that uses its id. Ie, all albums can be reached at http://example.com/gallery3/index.php/albums/7 (that's a link to album id 7). That url is permanent. Unfortunately we don't offer a user-friendly way to get those urls right now, but we could in the future.

Great, I can wait. G3 is working great now so it'll wait.
will you please let me know when the 'permalink' is ready?
i'll keep an eye out for the feature.
Dave, G3 should contact 1AND1 Hosting as they need a full featurer Gallery for there customers. they use a really weak gallery now.
thanks,

Nobody has done anything on permalinks. The core team probably won't write it, so it's unknown when it'll show up. Months, probably unless you find a dev who's willing to work on it.
It's almost always safe to update to the latest experimental.
