I've had a hunt around and can not find Google Site Map support mentioned.

Is this in the short term plans?

No plans for the G3 core team to implement a feature like this. It is in G2 (http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:Modules:sitemap ) and the community will have to develope one for G3.
