[hope this is the right forum, I am new here]
It looks to me like pictures/links vanish when when uploading directories form the server as "Admin" when "everybody" is locked. This is not the issue when uploading pictures. When you unlock everybody, pics are back there even when I have not changed my user status

background: I want to lock my Gallery3 so only registered users can see it. I do so by blocking "Everybody" and giving access to "registered users" and a group "family" (for instance). I thought that the rights of the group "users" will be higher than the right of the group "everybody".

Here is the summary - below is a detailed session
status: "everybody" is locked down on "Gallery" level
Action: I upload a directory as Admin from the server
observation: I can only see the picture names, not the thumbs or pics after uploading
Action: give "everybody" rights --> all pictures are back
Action: lock "Everybody" again, clear browser temp files, pictures and thumbs are gone

Detailed session to test this:
# Operating System: Linux 2.6.28-10.7.intel.E1000E.BHsmp
# Apache: Unknown
# PHP: 5.2.9
# MySQL: 5.0.81-community-log

What worked as "Admin" when "Everybody" had no permission
1. create directory, upload pictures form PC, no prob
2. create directory, upload pictures from server (individually selected pictures), no prob

Session that didn't work

1. "Everybody" has no permission, I am admin
2. create directory "test 5"
3. Upload from server an album called "2009 07 Hailstorm in Chatham" by selecting the album in the dialog
4. Wait until done
5. no Thumbnails!
here is part of the log from that part of the session:

Quote:
2009-09-25 12:04:27 -06:00 --- error: Uncaught Kohana_404_Exception: The page you requested, file_proxy/test5/2009 07 Hailstorm in Chatham/.album.jpg?m=1253901715, could not be found. in file system/core/Kohana.php on line 841

12:04:41 -06:00 --- error: Uncaught Kohana_404_Exception: The page you requested, file_proxy/test5/2009 07 Hailstorm in Chatham/WRIMG_20090726_10829.jpg?m=1253901755, could not be found. in file system/core/Kohana.php on line 841
2009-09-25 12:04:41 -06:00 --- error: Uncaught Kohana_404_Exception: The page you requested, file_proxy/test5/2009 07 Hailstorm in Chatham/WRIMG_20090726_10824.jpg?m=1253901728, could not be found. in file system/core/Kohana.php on line 841

..and so on for all 16 pictures in the album...then the same for the album thumb (I think)........

2009-09-25 12:04:48 -06:00 --- error: Uncaught Kohana_404_Exception: The page you requested, file_proxy/test5/2009 07 Hailstorm in Chatham/.album.jpg?m=1253901715, could not be found. in file system/core/Kohana.php on line 841

now
6. go to "Gallery level"
7. give "Everybody" permission to see (but stay as admin)
8. voila, all thumbs and pics are there, no special entry in log
9. go back up, lock "Everybody"
10. Thumbs still there where visited, gone where not visited [did not check log here]
11. Clean Firefox cache
12. Thumbs gone, essentially same errors as above in log

This seems only to be the case for directories, not pics loaded into existing directories.

Hope that helps and I am not a complete idiot

First upgrade to the latest experimental code:
http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery3:Upgrading

Then make try this:

no joy (slow day at work today). I had tried the Rewrite base before, doesn't work (gallery is in the root of a subdomain). The upgrade didn't fix the problem.

Fully replicable for directory add from server. It behaves as if whether admin sees the pics depends on the permissions granted to everybody for some odd reason

Could you PM me (click Write to author) login details and FTP (or SSH) login details?

ah, one interesting change I just noticed - in server add under the problematic mode (logged in as admin, everybody blocked, add directory), the thumbnail for the directory now shows up. That was not the case before. The thumbs for the pics do not, neither do the pics.

If you follow these steps for renaming your directories it will work:
http://gallery.menalto.com/node/91413#comment-322243

I renamed 2009 07 Hailstorm in Chatham to 2009-07-Hailstorm-in-Chatham and it worked. How did you create and import photos into that album? Was that imported from G2? Are you able to duplicate this issue? I've tried on my server and can't so I'm trying to get as many details as possible to see if we've found a bug or a few fringe cases.

Thanks. These are directories I FTP'd into my server (I have about 10,000 pictures there for other purposes). No G2 involved.

Did you try the folders I generated to play? no spaces in the folder names and I had the same issue when doing this. E.G., the album now called "directory server upload" has the same issue. - can you try to replicate in my gallery by importing one of the test directories from the server? These were also directly FTPd

just replicated the issue with one of the albums on the server. renamed by galley from pics_2 to "pics 2", which I found interesting

Renaming an individual photo from: "A380 maiden flight gears up" to "A380-maiden-flight-gears-up.jpg" made it show up.

Changing it back makes it disappear. I didn't even have to rename via FTP, just the Gallery interface.

Unfortunately, try as I might, I can't duplicate this on my server.

I see you are using pre-RC1 code, but please make sure you are using the latest experimental code:
http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery3:Upgrading

I know last night and early this morning there were changes, I'm not sure what do, but I know I got new code this morning.

Could you also try one thing, grab the rescue module and run it:

OK, so this is interesting - issues with spaces for some reason on that server. Have to think about that - most of my pictures do not have that problem. They do have underscores though.

Do you have the right setting replicated on your server? "Everybody" completely locked down, "admin" everything allowed?

DING DING DING, we have a winner. Good point. I thought I had locked out Everybody, but apparently one of the settings didn't stick. I removed all viewing from Everybody and now I can't see the images.

Thanks. I'll be able to write up a bug ticket and point the devs to several cases and way more data than they need to fix the problem :) I bet it has to do with running through the file_proxy at some point.

OK, I tried this with FTP pictures with
- album with no paces
- pics with no spaces but underscores

no problem at all!

So the problem occurs if either pics or the album has a space in the name when FTPed to the server and then imported from server. (btw, operating system is windows, FTP is FileZilla, in case it matters)

OK, I can probably find a way to work around that although I have many directories...does anybody have a script I can run on the server to insert something where there are spaces in directory names?

one strange bug :-)

Thanks for the session, this is great given that I discovered gallery 3 days ago!

dorfl

PS: one beef - in the name of the pic as shown in gallery, underscores are removed. Bad for me - my pics all have filenames that look like like identity_date_serialnumber. Any other votes to change that behavior?

Oh, I am so proud. 43 years old, first programmed in 6502 assembler and basic in the 80's, a bit of Pascal and DBASE III, then I gave up because I had to make money somehow, 20 years of nothing, and I still can contribute :-)

Awesome project. I will see what I can contribute in the future, including $
