Keeping orignal size and using orignal for thumbnails and display

	Newbie question here. How do I configure gallery 2 so that on upload the orginal file is kept but thumbnails and display are generated properly. When I upload orig pic, all I see the is the filename for the thumbnail and then upon opening item, its display is this huge picture. Any ideas or point me to right doc.
