I want to create a main album with sub albums that have the name of states and have user be able to upload photos to the state that they live in. Can I do this? I have the current "full version" the user registration is active also.

I guess I need someone to hold my hand. I created a main album called "State Gallery" I created sub albums under it for every state in the U.S. What I want is when some one registers, they will be able to add photos to the state of their choice. I clicked on "register and went through the registration process just as anyone would do. When I log in it takes me to the main page that shows the sub albums. I click on a sub album and can not add anything to it, I went to the "permissions" as admin for that sub album and gave permission to "add sub album" but did not put a user in the space. Does this sort of feature have to be done manually for each user? I do have the "user album" plugin installed,

The user album module works for user accounts you create, not for pre-creating albums.

Sounds like what you want to do is set permissions. You're almost there, but instead of assigning permissions on a user-by-user basis, assign them to the group. There is a group called Registered Users by default, if you assign that group, then all registered users can do what you specify there.

You can also create other groups, Site Admin > Groups and put users into those groups and set permissions on those groups. I'd suggest this is how you ALWAYS handle permissions on any system your working on. Put users into groups, assign permissions to groups. This makes managing resources many times easier, and it's how G3 works now too :)

Ok, I see I can go into an album I created and give permission to "registered users" to "add an album" I guess I have to do this for every state right? Will they have permission to (rate, comment.and so on) on all the states they look at or do I have to add this for every state? Looks like that would take me some time to do.

If you set permissions on the parent album Gallery automatically, by default, sets the permissions on all sub-albums/items. So you should only need to change them in one place. If you then didn't want them to add albums or items to that main album itself, then go back and remove the permissions but MAKE SURE that the check box to apply permissions to sub-albums is unchecked.

I did a complete reinstall of the program and added one main album with 50 sub albums. I gave permission to "add an album" to all of the sub albums to all registered users. When I log on as a user and go to "add an album" everything is fine,I am able to do that,I get the first screen that asks for the album name, then I get the next screen (see pic)I am thinking that a new user will not know what all of this stuff is about,Is there a way for them to just "add an album" and add photos to it with out all of this other info? I am thinking they will be confused as to what to do.

Sure, move on over to G3 :) It's a much, much more simple interface and easier to use. G2 tried to be everything under the sun. G3 is still in Beta though, but progressing quite nicely and moving right along. For G2, there is a "simple upload/edit/rotate" plugin, I've never used it, don't know if it works with 2.3 nor do I know if it would help with your issue:

I tried the G3 and could not make heads or tails out of it at all. I could not get the image for the album to show and the navigation was not very impressive to me at all. So once again is there a way to by pass all of the extra stuff when someone adds a sub album? When I log in as a user and go to add a sub album, that part is fine, then it goes to the next screen where there are all kinds of settings. I don't want the users to have to do this, (Unless they are really knowledgeable about "Gallery" they won't know what all of those things are. I want them to (add a sub album, then go directly to add photos to that sub album and that would be all they need to do) Is there a way to do a re direct from add a sub album and have it go right back to the add photos page?

You're going to need to dig into the code then.

Probably need to hack into one of these files:
modules/core/templates/ItemAddAlbum.tpl

or this:
modules/core/ItemAddAlbum.inc

I'm not sure what the hack would be but I do recall seeing someone do some sort of redirect on some page, so you might try searching the forums.

Let's try this, Can I set up my gallery where a registered user can upload edit or delete their own photos to an album of their choice? ie. user "a" lives in Alabama and wants to add photos to that album, Now I want user "a" to be able to upload edit or delete just their own photos. this way if user "b" wants to add photos to the same album, user "b" can not delete user "a" photos and visa versa.
