After getting my gallery back to a manageable state and loading up the latest version, I started to recheck a number of old and new features.

One of those is the showing of the pictures EXIF data. It used to be overlayed on the resize picture, but now it seems to be just displayed as a table, replacing all of the other document content, losing the complete look and feel of the current theme.

Was there any special reason for not implementing this differently, for example, make it show in a distinctly seperate window or tab. As it is now, it is too easy for the casual user to just hit the majic x at the top-right corner and loses the info as well as his(her) position inside the gallery.

Are you comparing G2 with the G3 behavior?
The wind theme ( renamed from default ) uses a modal window.
Upgrade to the latest experimental version: FAQ: How do I upgrade?
You can't navigate away from that page unless you use the browsers back button or close the modal window.
So I don't understand what you mean by; "and loses the info as well as his(her) position inside the gallery.".

If you don't like the current behavior then you can create a theme that has the behavior you expect.
