Thumbnails ok but no photos - blank page

Orig Gallery got infected (don't ask, ya, ya, I know yada yada). So I created a new clean install. Created first album, loaded images already on server - worked great, that album is back. Clicked on one of the thumbnails and [ blank screen ] - no menu, no picture. So I removed everything and did it again, trying to be careful that I didn't miss anything - same results. The full images are in the 650k range.
