Greetings,
New to Gallery and really like the beta 3 version. Tested it on my desktop and then went to install on my web hosting site where I found out about the PHP 5.2.3 requirement. I contacted the hosting company and they said:
"The upgrade to PHP 5.2.6 will come as part of switching to a newer version of Debian Linux (which upgrades thousands of different software
packages). However, the version of Debian Linux that includes PHP 5.2.6 no longer includes any version of PHP 4. So, it will take a bit of time to make the conversion since thousands of our customers are still on PHP V4. One thing we should mention is that although our version is listed as "PHP 5.2.0", the Debian Linux version of PHP includes all security fixes, and many bug fixes, up through PHP version 5.2.11. So it's actually sort of a mixed version -- it contains some parts from later
versions.
My questions are:
1. Aside from security issues, are there any feature in 5.2.3 that Gallery 3 needs?
2. There are three scripts with the 5.2.3 check. Could these be bypassed?
3. Is there any way to pull back the 5.2.3 features into the 5.2.0 base?
Thanks

I'm pretty sure there is also some functionality issues as well. They could stay where they are with Debian old-stable and just upgrade to a newer version of PHP with all the security fixes
You could try bypassing the version checks and see if anything doesn't work.
Here's what was changed/added between 5.2.2 and 5.2.3
