This directory contains variable data that changes constantly when the system is running.
That's a standard name of a standard directory on all Linux based systems. On any standard install of Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and a few other distributions I've played with /var is where your website files get put by default.
It also contains more than just your images, it contains log files, temporary stuff, and other data. So renaming it to something like "images" or "albums" would be even more inelegant and non-descriptive. Using var, if you have an understanding of the Linux file system is actually a lot more descriptive of what that directory does.

It is not configurable. Why is it inelegeant?
FAQ: Are my photos secure? They're right there on my website!
There is a task for this to be configurable but it is not a priority at this time.

I've have to ask to be sure, but I'm guess it was named 'var' based on:
