Blank Thumbnail Issues

I seem to always have issues with building thumbnails. I've tried uploading my images and using server add but it wont make a thumbnail it just puts the file name. I got it to work once and then a few minutes later all the thumbnails disappeared and now I can't even see the images when I click on them, it just brings up an empty box with the file name in it.

I'm not sure why its doing this, I'm using ImageMagic and it appears to be installed and working fine. Any suggestions?

* Version: 3.0 beta 3
* Albums: 1
* Photos: 3

# Operating System: Linux 2.6.28.9
# Apache: Unknown
# PHP: 5.2.9
# MySQL: 5.1.30
# Server load: 2.52 2.25 2.08

Also upgrade to the latest version:
http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery3:Upgrading

For the time being, if you have removed the Everybody group from being able to view images, do not use a space, ' or ~ in your directory name.

Ah that was it... I just turned on the everybody group for viewing of images and they came back. How can I make this work so I can leave it off though? I'm not sure what directory name you are talking about but I dont see any spaces or any of those characters. Is it the directory the images are stored in or the directory gallery is installed in?

Latest released version yes, lastest version of code, not by a long shot, many, many changes have happened since B3 was released.
