I would like to do the following:

- Allow users to register themselves (retrieve passwords, edit acct details, etc)
- Allow mutliple users to upload photos to specific galleries.
- Allow users to star-rate photos and post comments
- Allow users to share photos and galleries via email, facebook, etc...
- Search for photos based on date, keywords, rating, etc
- Easily customize the look of the gallery

Thanks.

No, there isn't a registration module for G3 yet. Use G2

Yes, G3 and G2

Yes, easier than G2. For G3, you really only need to be comfortable with HTML and CSS. For G2, you've got to learn a bit of Smarty

G2 is probably what you need/want right now. Check back on G3 in 6-9 months. :)

Great reply. thanks for the good info.

Not being too familiar with the product, I am shocked to see that G2 has more functionality. Is G3 a complete re-write?

I downloaded G2 a couple years ago and found it interesting but overly complex for my needs. What are osme competeing prodcust in this space I could look at?

Yes, G3 is a complete rewrite.

G1, G2 and G3 are essentially all completely different products. They do the same thing, but work differently and are completely different code bases with different lines of thought in how things should be done. G2 took a long time to gain adoption from the community in terms of themes and 3rd party modules because it's a huge complex beast. G3 is much more friendly to the coders and themes and has already taken off much faster than G2 (iow, there is already more themes and modules available for G3 than there was in the first year (maybe 2 years) after G2 had it's initial release and G3 isn't even out of Beta yet. :)
