REMOTE_USER http authentication not working

Hi there, I have recently set up gallery on my home webserver and it has been working brilliantly, including some of my tweaks to config.php settings. I am having trouble getting the REMOTE_USER login to work on my Abyss webserver under the HTTPauth plugin.

As far as I can see it should be supported as a CGI Environment variable, but it never completes the login process in gallery - still needs doing separately. I have set the usernames the same for webserver and gallery but am obviously missing something, has anybody got any ideas or got it working themselves?

Switch to a web server that someone has heard of, is widely used, supported and understood? That's the only idea I have.
