Can I auto rotate based on EXIF information?

Hi all,

I have a gallery3 install running, and have used the "server add" module extensively to add a large number of pictures.
A lot of the images however are tilted 90 degrees, and not automatically positioned correctly.
Is there any way to losslessly rotate them using the EXIF information? Ideally I would like to do this as a batch processing option under maintenanc, or something similar.
The regular rotate functionality ignores EXIF and will destroy the graphics quality in the process.

Thanks for your help, and an awesome product.

B.

No, not yet. I believe there is a ticket for those in trac:

Since Gallery3 is still in BETA (and free) I don't want to whine too much, but I noticed the rotation based on EXIF info has been moved to the "field of dreams".
I am very happy with the new Gallery, but this for me has a huge impact, and friends who want to use Gallery3 as well don't do so because of this being missing.
We all have thousands of pictures we host on our sites, and it is key that they're rotated based on EXIF automatically. Manual rotation can be done losslessly of course, but is tedious when you're adding large numbers of pictures.

I understand that choices about core versus module always have to be made, but I am quite sure this is not just a "nice to have" feature like integration with printing websites - this is basic functionality to just display pictures, a core goal of the product, right?
I am willing to pay anyone willing to write this module for gallery3, but really, I think it should be core stuff.

Thanks again for a great free product, and I really hope you guys reconsider this one.

Cheers

Baldrick:

Dumb question -- Why not get the pictures rotated correctly from the source, and leave Gallery out of it? This looks like it might do the trick:

I've been meaning to do something similar with my own pictures before uploading to Gallery, Flickr, whatever.

Hi Mike,

I appreciate the suggestion. But while I could manage that myself, others (think family members & friends) doing uploads might not have the skills required to make that work. They would most likely attempt "dumb" rotation, destroying the image quality.
Also, it would require software and a processing step, whereas in the old setup you could just hook up your camera to a PC in an internet cafe, and drag and drop the pics in the upload applet - done.
Most picture host sites have this by default. To use your example of Flickr; Flickr offers this functionality if you set it via your preferences:

I don't really want to use something like Flickr myself because I like the gallery concept (your photos, your site and all that) and I have close to 30 GB worth of pics on my webserver. It worked perfectly fine on Gallery 2 as well - it's just not available in Gallery 3.

Thanks,

B.
