I desperately need to implement a gallery-type program on my website and it needs to be able to handle more than 50,000 images. I did the research, and Gallery seemed to be the smartest choice. But now people are telling me that I need to learn PHP from the ground up to even think about it. That doesn't seem right. But I do find that I'm getting frustrated trying to get it set up. My server admins installed it for me, but configuration is not all that simple. Your advice and suggestions, please. |

Specific issues we can help with but a big generalization of 'configuration is not all that simple.' is a bit too vague for us to help out.
So to be general:
G3 is simpler to configure than G2, but has less options.

Well, the first time I even tried it out jsut to see how it worked, it kept breaking. I'm sure it was something I was doing wrong, but it was frustrating.
The first issue i ran into was trying to tell it how to grab the images from the server itself...but I think that's an issue with my directory structure? - why does this thing keeping changing my capialized "I" to html italic code??? GRRR... anyway, it's set up as a test site outside my main site directory, so I'm sure that's part of the problem.
The second massive issue, and my reading just now tells me I may be stopped cold... is that I must be able to control how it looks. And for the first time I read a thread that said none of the Gallery 2 themes will translate directly to 3, and no new themse for 3 have been written! This is depressing.
I would go backwards and start with Gallery2, but the reason I ended up picking gallery in the first place was because of the ability to read IPTC tags and make them searchable. (though the non-boolean-ness has been disappointing...)
I'm getting very frustrated. I'm not a programmer, but I've been on the net professionally for 15 years, and the things I want to be able to do SEEM, but I guess I'm wrong, to be extremely fundamental and basic. The fact that they aren't is really amazing.

Give it some time. In the beginning of G2 there was only 1 theme. There is now 2 themes from the developers and others from the community. http://codex.gallery2.org/Category:Gallery_3:Themes
G3 is still in beta and G2 has been around for years so you have to expect there will be some limitaions
FAQ: What about feature X? It's really important to me!
Development of various features takes time and effort. We are only a small group of volunteers and doing this in our spare time.
Perhaps G3 is not for you. We did not develop it for all users. We tried that with G2 and it got even more complex and difficult to maintain and develop.
You say that you are frustrated but still have not pointed to a specific issue that we can help you on.
What is 'extremely fundamental and basic.'? We can't read your mind. Perhaps the feature you are looking for is in G2.

First of all, I appreciate that you are taking the time to try and respond, I truly do. Thank you! Getting this to work is more important than you can imagine.
Well, I jsut went back to noodle around and see if I could remember some of the problems I was having, and Bingo! Right out the gate: it's not uploading. At least, not correctly. Add pictures... navigate to the folder, select 3 images, it lists them, the uploading progress bar fills up very fast, it says uploading...then nothing. It says 0 of however many, even if it's only one, and nothing else happens. The other images are listed as pending. It doesn't upload, doesn't close, doens't do anything. My only option is to close.
Then I go back, I see that the gallery is created, but the photos aren't visible. And it didn't add all the photos, just the first one of the first batch and the single one I tried the second time.
There has been no modifications of the program, my server admins just did a straight install.
I just tried logging out, logging back. It thinks there are pictures, it has the names listed, but they aren't there.
So that's first and foremost.
The underlying software is correct, I went through much back and forth with my server admins to make sure that it was. Latest PHP and the rest.
And, for the record, i did successfully add some photos when I first started messing with it.

This has been an issue that has been reported before.
In some cases upgrading to an experimental version helps:
FAQ: How do I upgrade?
You can look though the forums for more info:
http://gallery.menalto.com/node/88654
or
FAQ: Why am I seeing errors about suhosin.session.encrypt?
Those might help.

When I went back into the admin, the pictures were visible, so I don't think the Suhosin is the problem - they are getting uploaded, Gallery is just not showing them until later, or letting me know they are uploaded.

I sent it to your private message box. Thanks for asking, and thanks for anything you discover, because now that I'm trying to make it work again and seeing how severely it's not working for me, I'm very concerned. Every time I think "Maybe Gallery isn't it" and I go looking around for something else, I come back to Gallery - and I come back to Gallery 3 specifically because of the ability to read and use IPTC tags.

I see nothing
Perhaps some of your requirements are better suited to G2.
