Why no boolean search?

One of the biggest issues for me long term is the ability to boolean search the images. (the other issue was being able to use IPTC to tag, which G3 does) I'm not even close to understanding programming, but a friend who is a professional told me that it's a very fundamental sort of thing, and he was very surprised that Gallery has had so much development, yet that basic is still missing and seems to be likely to remain so for the forseeable future.

It does seem like something lots of people would want...what is it that makes it so uninteresting or daunting for the developers?

Why not tell him to implement it? Then he can show those lazy good-for-nothing incompetent G3 developers how it's *supposed* to be done!

No one said or implied that anyone was lazy, or good for nothing, or incompetent. Not me, not my friend.

Sounds you should start with Gallery 2. There are some pretty good boolean search hacks for G2. Just do a search.

I don't know about uninteresting or daunting. I doubt either. The feature list from the Alpha 2 release states that full text and boolean searching is there:

So what's not working for you?

Are you looking for something more like this:

I asked about it a few weeks back and was told no, doesn't work.

I can't get to the second link, no user or pass.

My need for true Boolean is really a need to be able to drill down. Many of my photos, which are vintage, will share certain characteristics by the tens of thousands, such as era: 1940's. Well, if you want to see pictures that include X feature, but only those from the 1940's, you will either get ALL The 1940's, or ALL the X feature, you can't get ONLY the pictures with X feature from the 1940's. It's about the need to EXclude, not INclude.
