Does anyone have an opinion about whether Gallery 2 would be a good starting point to build the following system?
I'm working on a project that will require me to set up a fairly simple online product catalog. Each product needs to have an image along with a few attribute fields such as price and size. The products need to be searchable (and possibly sortable) by each of these fields. I'd like the system to be php/mysql based
Since the product is image-centric, I'm conceiving the system as a primarily a photo gallery, with some added functionality. The admin interface should allow an intuitive method to add/remove/edit products, and manage the gallery display order.
Options other than Gallery (or another similar cms) include hand-coding the thing, using a general-purpose cms such as Joomla, or semi-hand-coding using a framework such as Cake.
What do you folks think?

You will get a biased opinion here:
Go with G2 or G3
Install it and try it out. Ask specific questions.

I actually vote against using G2 for anything other than photo albums. People try to shoe-horn all sorts of expectations into a G2 install for which it's not designed, then have real difficulties having it work just the way they want. My advice is, if you want a product catalog you should look for an online product catalog, not an online photo album.

We designed a product catalog for a client.
Although there is no commerce setup for the services.
