I'm currently installing Gallery v1.3.1 under PostNuke 0.7.1.4 for a small community of photographers who wish to post photo and comment on each other's work. Basically, each user posts one or two of his pictures, comments of the others pictures, reads the comments he received on his own, and post one more picture a few days later.
The current implementation of Gallery is barely adequate for my needs. First, when a picture is uploaded, nothing links it to the poster. I could post a picture and remain anonymous, or post a real bad picture and say it was uploaded by another user. That's a real moderation issue. Second, comments are not signed either: I can write whatever name I like when I comment. I could send personnal attacks pretending I'm someone else. Big issue again.
The problem with picture galleries is that everyone wants feedback for his picture, but that nobody wants to comment. There should be an upload point or ratio system. The system administrator, for instance, that it costs you 5 points to upload a picture and that a comment gives you a single upload point. New Gallery users could be given some freebie user points and the system administrator or moderator could reward good users with extra upload points.
Every uploaded picture should have a title chosen by the user. Also, adding some info or explanation on the picture (or reviewing the information the software got from the JPG file) should be part of the upload process, to make life easier for uploaders. Lastly, many system administrators would probably like to have a rating system for the pictures, but that system should be able to be turned off by those who don't like that option.
Good Photo Galleries that could inspire you can be found here:

One last question: Do you have any idea when Gallery 2.0 is due to be released? Do you have a target date in mind? Thank you all.

Thanks for the link. I'll be waiting for the beta version (maybe the alpha is a bit risky for a running site).
