I think I have downloaded Gallery 2 onto my webhost - Blue Voda. (They recommended I use Gallery). I got onto gallery through fatastico and followed the instructions to down load it. When I look on my control panel I now have a gallery branch under fanatsticodata and when I click on the gallery branch it comes up with my domain name www.stevebillsphotography.com.au indicates the "size" is 147bytes, the "type" is text/x-generic and the "perms" are 0750. Can someone actually tell me if this means I have actually installed it? I was hoping that when I installed it it would appear as an icon or similar on my web builder page that I would just "click" on and drag it onto the page or similar. Then I would fill it with the photos I was after. have tried reading through the trouble shooting and FAQ pages but the language and terms being used are way beyond my understanding!! I can't understand it at all. Can someone please tell me - in very basic terms - what I may have done wrong and what can I expect to see when I actually have it? Steve |

do you have ftp access? if so navigate into your ftp and look to see if there is a new folder that has been created. If the answer is yes make a note of the name and add it to your existing url i.e http://www.stevebillsphotography.com.au/newfolder

Thanks.
I have looked in my FTP and there are no accounts other than
/home/steveb...c_html/steve which I presume is the folder for my actual site. So I presume that I haven't downloaded it correctly. I followed the instructiosn as per the Fatastico Gallery 2 Installation that I got from Gallery so I'm not sure what has gone wrong. It told me to enter a new username and password which I did and that fantastico does the rest.
Can you confirm that what I am actually doing is downloading it onto my webhosts server not my personal computer? or have I misunderstood that?
Also, When I have downloaded correctly, what do I see on my web page builder? Is it as sismle as being another icon or similar that I use??

Fantastico is not the preferred method of installation, as we have no control over their implementation.
Please follow our instructions.
If you have specific questions we can answer we'd be glad to help.

In addition to what suprsidr said, you'll find detailed installation instructions here:
http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:How_do_I_Install_Gallery2
I'm afraid nobody here knows what your web page builder is, or what the "icons" on it refer to. Thats going to be a webhost-specific thing that we can't advise you about.
It is certainly true that many of the problems reported on this forum can be traced back to Fantastico's dodgy installations - our advice is to have nothing to do with it.
You might also want to look instead at Gallery3 - which is rather more modern than G2.

Thanks for the info. I have tried to follow the instructions both for Gallery 2 and Gallery 3 and all that happened was it went into my downloads page and when I tried to open it there are just small files that don't seem to open anything? What am I doing wrong?? Nomally when I download programs they come up on the downloads and then automatically install themselves. I am happy to believe that I am doing something wrong but all I did was click on the download for 2.3.1 (and then for 3.0 when 2 didn't seem to work) and it started what looked like every other time I have downloaded something form the net. When it didn't install automatically I double clicked on it in the download page and a box came up saying did I want to open it or save it. I have tried both and they both did the same thing - led me to my computer drive when they were sitting in a folder I opened the folder and there are a number of small folders within them but when you open those (including one that says install me) it just goes to a notepad type page with technical jargon in it.
I apologise for my lack of technical knowledge or terms. I hope you can understand what I am trying to explain.

Steve, you need to read and follow the install instructions as written - they're terse, but accurate. Specifically, for G3, step 2:
and for G2:
