Hello,
Is there a way to use Gallery just on your pc? without publishing to the web? I do have Gallery on my site but would like to see and share my photos without going online? If Gallery is just for the web, is there a program for making albums that you can burn to disk, to share or keep, that is good but is free or reasonable? I love the way Gallery works but would like it just on the computer and not online. is this possible, what would you recommend?
This would also be a good back up to Gallery. I have read how to have a static back up but do not understand it and cannot implement the instructions. I would like something that is gallery but not online.
thanks very much,
barbara

Gallery is designed to be used on websites.
On a local computer, if you use a Mac, it comes with IPhoto which does a better job than gallery on that environment.
Here are some options for Windows: http://www.brighthub.com/multimedia/photography/articles/61806.aspx
And on Linux, http://blog.worldlabel.com/2010/photography-with-open-source-linux.html

You could run a lamp or wamp setup and use G2 or G3 no problem.

Thanks for your suggestions. I will take a look at all this and see if I can use them. I don't udnerstand the lamp/wamp thing as I don't have a server. I'm more concerned with losing the Gallery info online as there are over 20,000 now and will be much more than that. I do not have them organized as well as on Gallery so, since it is already organized and captioned, the same on my pc would be great and I may not add to the online gallery if I could do that. I see lots of slide show programs but the captioning is not there-you much label your photos as the caption. I will look into these. I appreciate your time

He was referring to the fact that you can use tools like XAMPP or MAMP to create a virtual server on your local machine and then run Gallery within this (or actually install the required server software).
My opinion, remains that if you plan to run a website to display some of your pictures, then try Gallery.
To manage your images and other digital assets on your local machine, then tools tools like IPhoto are far better, infinitely more powerful and better suited.
I'll leave the XAMPP and MAMP for testing before deploying online purposes only myself.
However, as pointed out, it is a possibility.
Not one I would recommend myself but it is there and the choice is yours.

Sorry for sounding so dense. I have Gallery on a website. I love it. but, I would like to let the website go and have an album like gallery on my pc to organize my photos. photo editing and managing is not a problem, I have several programs for that. I wanted something that would display like Gallery instead of just a screen of images. I wanted captions like looking through a real album. I caption my photos in Gallery but have no backup. I do not understand how to have a Gallery backup on my pc so I wouldn't lose the pictures if their server crashed. not likely but still. I don't want anything online but would like to save my photos in a digital album with captions-not just the photo tag. I know I am being a pain as I don't see anything out there that does what I want. I had a program called express collage but it does not work on windows 7. I made a dozen albums with captions that was just what I needed but nothing I find now will do that. everything is to publish to the web or is a photo editor with tags only, not in page form like Gallery-or at least lets you get to a single photo with caption and then slideshow. I know this is the wrong place to ask for something that isn't Gallery but I didn't know where else to ask.
I'm sorry I just don't understand "you can use tools like XAMPP or MAMP to create a virtual server on your local machine and then run Gallery within this (or actually install the required server software)." that sounds like what I would want, to run it just on my pc but I wouldn't have the slightest idea how to go about it. I am a non-geek that has learned basic html and can edit some of the items in Gallery, like the name of the album and the background but that's about it. directions for me would be so step by step it would drive you nuts to walk me through it. but I thank you for trying to help me. I am just not savvy enough to 'get' it. anyone that would want to help me do this, would you be interested in trading for some art?
I really wanted to let go of the website for financial reasons. But over 20,000 photos is not an easy thing to move around or duplicate. My photos are all over-the new pc, an external hard drive and cd's. It would be nice to just keep adding to Gallery without having to pay for a domain or move all of them to something else.

In that case, take a look at installing XAMPP. You can get it here: http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html
After doing this, you can then install Gallery within XAMPP.
Their support forum is here: http://www.apachefriends.org/f/viewforum.php?f=34

OK, this is sounding a bit simpler. I only have Gallery 1.5. can I move it to my pc or would this take the same tech knowledge as making a static copy? I know there is a way to move between Galleries and I have attempted to read through them but it is pretty much a foreign language for me and I cannot follow the steps since I don't know what they mean. will look at the links now-thanks. (this is almost like gambling-can't win and can't lay off!)

I don't know much about G1 (or what a static copy is) but I suppose you can just download the whole website into the relevant XAMPP folder on your local machine since it doesn't use databases as G2 and G3 do.
