how to create a very simple theme?

So... I've installed gallery2 on a CentOS5.6 system I have shell access to, and everything has gone perfectly except no X11 means I had to use netpbm instead of ImageMagick.

Now I get to the point where I want to make the site look and feel like the vision in my head, and the info I find is just confusing me. :/ (They talk about theme.tpl files, but I have 8 different themes after the installation... which one do I edit? How do I tell that it's active?)

What I want is a front page that has a single large image in teh very centre of an ebony black page. Drop down menus sitting at the top and to the left of that image in a dark grey for things like: about; folio; contact; etc... My logo in the top right (maybe...) When someone clicks through to a portfolio, I want to present a single large image with thumbnails (either on the right or left or at the bottom, but i am leaning towards the right) of the other images in the gallery.

I want to clear off all the extraneous items, like gallery buttons (I will move them to the about page if the project would like the links for SEO purposes), login fields, search fields, the admin links, everything must go! Just want plain black site with dark grey lettering to best highlight the images.

All the samples of themes that I could find seem to be one heck of a lot more complicated, or busier, or both. Is this a hard thing to do from scratch? Do you know of a theme that already exists that is like this? Or one that's close taht I could modify?

TIA!

Cheers!!

Using gallery2's embed API you can do just about anything.
Take this one for example, simple page with three different albums slowly rotating w/ a click through to the album's page.

Super cool sample.

I have more samples and tools here.

Although that sample uses gallery2's embed API extensively, it is no template - but a complex example of gallery's flexibility.
You can actually login and manage gallery items and feeds plus I made a desktop version featuring slideshow pro.

lets replace "template" with source code.
is the source code who generated that page available for free ?

The finished product belongs to the client it was designed for(their version is way more polished) but the parts are mostly open source.
But I don't have a drop-in solution like that for free.
