To my knowledge, there is not a module that batch renames items already in the Gallery. You will want to rename the items before uploading. On windows you can try http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Main_Intro.php and on mac you can use the automator application.
NOTE: If you already uploaded the pictures, you have to delete them (through the Gallery interface) or rename them one-by-one. Do not rename them on the server!

This module is fine but I manage a library of over 15,000 images for a town hall.
I do not know if this module will suit users, given the number of images.
