Why are signature links on this forum "nofollow"?

Joomla, phpbb, Magento, Opencart etc's forums have dofollow links in post signatures and they seem to be doing fine without getting inundated with spam...

It is one of the many steps taken to prevent spam.

One of the unnecessary ones it seems...as I mentioned in original post, others seem to be doing very well without it.

Spam did drop when we implemented that feature in the forums. Perhaps they do something different?

They use phpbb for starters :-)

Things like Akismet and reCaptcha help too.

What I've found to be the most effective is an active community - and I'm not talking about moderation etc. There seems to be an inverse correlation between how active the board is and the amount of spam it gets. An inactive board would get a lot of spam...

Are you sure it was the implementation of nofollow that reduced spam? Or did this coincide with release of G3, which increased activity on the board and reduced spam?

We did use phpBB a a long time ago :-)
We have implemented lots of things in Drupal to combat spam. I am not sure of when what was implemented when and we have continued to tweak the various things to keep them at bay. I believe we have done a good job of the last year or so. There is the odd manual spammer that gets though but the moderation of the community gets them chopped quickly.

More info on GMC.

Spam or not, why should we or those forums allow links to be followed and crawled from these forums?

These and those other forums you mention should NOT be used to try an increase your site ranking. These forums are extremely popular by google and get crawled frequently (several times an hour at least). It has nothing to do with G3. IIRC, the nofollow change was done a few years ago. G3 also didn't increase activity on the board, maybe a little, but it's always been a busy forum.

Well, I happen to think that the people who enrich the project via their meaningful, helpful and valuable participation, (like the two of you for instance) should get credited/rewarded for that...

The reward I get from this project is not from traffic to my site.

Sure, different people are motivated by different things.
