Can no longer upload photos to Gallery v1.4.4-pl4

Our club has Galley v1.4.4 in our hosted website and we can no longer upload images to new albums. I know very little about websites and we want to fix it and possibly upgrade to V3. What would be better to dump v1.4.4 (We have alot of albums and photos in there!) or try to migrate through v2 to v3?
How dificult is this to manage and perform while preserving all the albums that we have? Any help or advice welcome.
