Errors on Galleries on server after upgrading from php 5.9.2 to 5.3.6

Hello,

I realize after perusing the forum that we should have upgraded all the galleries on our server before performing a php upgrade from 5.9.2 to 5.3.6, but we didn't even realize which websites were running the old gallery software, so we did not.

Now that we have done the php upgrade, gallery software either works with errors or not at all. What is the easiest and safest way to upgrade the galleries on our server to 2.x and then maybe 3.x if neccessary. I saw a message stating that gallery 2.3.1 was released specifically to lend support for php 5.3.x. Can we just upgrade to this, or will we need to go in steps?

I have seen some have upgrading problems and need many restores before getting it right, and I don't want to reinvent the wheel if I don't have to.
