Enable php gettext on OS X 10.6.8

I'm new to both OS X and gallery2.

I tried gallery2 on my iMac snow leopard with apache2, php5.3.6 and mysql5.1.54.

The only problem is that the gettext is not enabled in that version of php for OS X.

I got gettext compile and installed but my php wouldn't pick it up, I was tolled that need to compiled in to php. But I'm not sure how and don't know if do so, how many other modules may be omitted to be compiled in and that could be even worse.

By some web search, I found

which supposed to be the best solution: one line command for all!

But I just don't know enough to make it through: the new php is installed in a new location and in order to use it, several things need to be done and I don't know what and how.

Could anyone tell me what I need to do in order to switch to this newly installed php?
