I'm sure there's some way to set this up, and someone's probably already done so. I'm terrible at figuring out complex UNIX permission setups. My kingdom for native ACLs. Anyway.
albums/ is normally owned by apache, since it needs to create and modify there. This is fine if you have root access for when you manually need to tweak something in there. But I don't normally have that access.
What's the best way to configure gallery and the user/group permission bits so my normal user and apache both have full control of albums/?

In general, you should not be fooling around with the files inside the albums directory unless you really know what you're doing.
But, you can use the "cleanup" script from the User Guide to change the permissions on the contents of the albums directory so that you can modify them. You'll need to run this script fairly often, because all new files created by Gallery will have the original restrictions.
