symlink /var to virtualbox shared folder

Alright, I've been trying and trying but can't seem to get the permissions correct for my symlink. I run virtualbox and want to install gallery3 on one of my VMs. Thing is, I make the VMs HD only 8 gigs since the OS is on a SSD, while all media is stored on a RAID 1 setup. Anyways, I mount the vboxsf with options uid=1000,gid=1000, then chmod 777 both the symlink location and the actual location of the symlink. Still stuck on step 1 of the install. Not completely new to linux, but don't quite understand permissions or users that well...
