Every time I try to use the updater, I get to step 2 and get this FAILED error:

Error: Some files and or directories in your storage directory are not writeable by the webserver user. Run chown -R webserverUser /hermes/web04/b1857/pow.brightdreamer/g2data/ OR run chmod -R 777 /hermes/web04/b1857/pow.brightdreamer/g2data/.

I have repeatedly changed the listed directory to 777 using FireFTP in my Firefox. I cannot access any further into the root directory from my webserver than my home directory. I don't know what else I can do to make it understand that it has write access.

If I could I just wouldn't run the update but it won't even show my gallery when I go to my home gallery page. I'm extremely frustrated.

chmod -R 777 /hermes/web04/b1857/pow.brightdreamer/g2data

that would be the correct command(assuming the path is correct) but sometimes you simply don't have the correct permissions and need root access to perform such actions.
Ask your host, or try some of the techniques:
FAQ: How can I fix the filesystem permissions of the Gallery storage folder?
FAQ: How can I fix the problem with the Storage Directory Permissions reported by the Upgrade Wizard?

I can access the g2data folder, there's no problem with that. It's set to 777, it shows as 777. All the folders within it are not, though. Could that be the problem? Do I have to go in and manually update every single folder and file to 777?

The -R in chmod -R 777 means recursive, so yes.

I got my webserver host to manually update all the permissions to 777 for the g2data folder and all files and folders within it.

However, Gallery Updater is still giving me the same error. I don't know what else to do. Is there any way to force it NOT to upgrade and still use the old version that was working just fine before all this?

replace all the files w/ the older version(not g2data)

Which version are you coming from? and which version are you trying to upgrade to?

I wasn't even trying to upgrade, I just was trying to access my old site and it was like "oh look you have to upgrade, here's 6 'easy' steps." I just want it to stop doing it and let me access my old Gallery. I haven't even installed any new files.

It says "2.2 Upgrader" on the top of the page so I assume that's what I had? I'm really not even very proficient at this.

I tried to upload a brand-new version of Gallery from my webserver, even, and it says my PHP isn't a high enough version to even run their newest version.

this means g2data/versions.dat is missing or unreadable.
