I installed gallery for a family genealogy site. It has scans from a Journal that the members don't want to make easy for the general public to see.

I have no direct links from the family web site to this gallery, you have to register/login to a forum to see a link and information on how to view the photos.

The problem is that I have very non-techie users that are having trouble going to the gallery page, finding the login text link, typing in a name and password, pressing the login button, and then refreshing the page to have the hidden gallery appear - even my brother who works with computers couldn't do this for some reason.

Is there any way to make a direct text link to the hidden (password protected) gallery so that they can just click on the link from the forum and see this protected gallery?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated - many low-tech grannies that want to read great-great-great-granfathers journal will eternally thank you.

if it's password protected, you'll need to log in first.

I'm a little confused as to what you want. one trick would be to make the album a subalbum. Then hide the parent album, so visitors to the gallery won't see it. The sub album has no protection at all, so anyone with a direct link to the subalbum can see it.

Alternatively, you could create a copy of login.php and edit it to allow for username/password to be sent from outside Gallery (i.e. remove some hack and submit checks). The most important thing is to make sure that this link is only visible to logged-in members of your forum, and of course there are some minor security issues (sending password in cleartext over the internet), but it would be secure enought for your purposes I guess.

Naw, just use the XML mod to HTML your whole gallery, since the family history pictures won't change very often. The only place you could possibly want the direct link is for living people, where the pictures change often. While we're at it, just associate pictures into your GEDCOM file and don't link at all. Look at my site below, with 78,000 ancestors, using phpgedview (also free at sourceforge):
